You may be on to something there.

Read all of the font data in for the current row and write them as a bitmap could maybe equal up to a 50% speed up.

sorry I forgot something, I set port to all output in my glcd_init function.

Do a SET_TRIS_B( 0x00 );

somewhere in your main before calling readID.

I think the tris defaults to 0xFF which is ...
