No, change the crystal is not a problem for the LCD if you configure
#use delay(...)

The only solution I can't test is the one from Ttelmah. I can't add a resistor in my pcb.

I will change the crystal with a 40MHz.

I don't think that will work.

If you look in the datasheet, you can supply a 40MHz clock from an external oscillator.

However, if you plan on using a crystal, the max it will run is 25MHz.

See DS39616C-page 354

The alternative to a series resistor, is to get a crystal with a lower 'gain'. Look at the Microchip application note, about selecting the right crystal, and try a different one.
Also, though 'brutal', you can always cut a track to add a resistor.....
