Driving Nokia3310 Lcd |

Hi,
I’m trying to write a string on Nokia3310 Lcd with no success.
I’m using CCS C under MPLAB v8.73. The microcontroller I’m using is 16f877A.
As you can see in the figure I’m using proteus to simulate the circuit. The driving code for the lcd is by Michel Bavin.
The Lcd library is :
Code: | ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
/*

by Michel Bavin 2004 --- [email protected] --- http://users.skynet.be/bk317494/ ---

*/
//driver library name:nokia_3310.c
// ex:
//
// ...
// nokia_init();
// ...
// nokia_gotoxy(0,0);
// printf(nokia_printchar,"test???");
// ...

Well the biggest error is in using Proteus ! Simulation is NOT the real world. I may sound like an old record but Proteus is FULL of bugs, errors, faulty drcs...
Unless you can Debug Proteus (the actual code NOT what is generated)you best get some real chips,a breadboard and learn by doing.
If you do that, then you'll very,very quickly learn that the 'schematic' that Proteus allows will NEVER work in the real world.
'Little' details like power supply issues, floating pins,no crystal, no bypass caps....ALL add up to hardware that can never function.
As to the 'driver' code...who says it actually works with your LCD AND your PIC ? Again, several lines come to mind, far too many to list here...
But to start off, you don't have a 'fuses' line after the processor include. |

Hi temtronic,
Thank you for your fast reply. As far as I know fuses should be set in the part when it is programmed and it does not affect the compilation. However the project wizard takes care of the fuses, I think. See the figure below.

yes, I’m aware of that.

I reviewed the code, and it seems that it’s ok, I hope.

I’m learning please try to.

Really, fuses should be in your program after the # device. While you can set them with the programmer interface,if written into the PIC program it would be very clear(to others) that you have LowVoltage Programming fuse set.
Having LVP set can cause you a LOT of problems when the PIC is actually programmed and in use.Unless you really have a low voltage programmer(99% aren't) then you should set the option to NOLVP.
I would suggest cutting code for the 'Hello World' test and be sure the PIC and a texttype LCD work fine.That simple program will check out 99% of the hardware,programmer,etc.
Be aware that the 877 is a 5 volt device, the Nokia a 3.3 device so you WILL require logic level translation between the two.proteus , of course, won't tell you this , and if you wire it up according to Proteus you'll destroy the LCD.... |

Hi temtronic,
Your comment was very helpful;
Quote: | Be aware that the 877 is a 5 volt device, the Nokia a 3.3 device so you WILL require logic level translation between the two. |
I managed to get it work; I only removed the 3.3v and replaced it with VDD. Since it’s only a simulation the LCD will not be fried. In real circuit I will use 3.3v; the purpose from using simulation for me is to check the correctness of the code.
Warm regards. |

I'm glad you got it to work, at least as a simulation. As you are now aware Proteus did not allow the LCD Vdd to be 3.3V, so really Proteus fried your simulated LCD !!
Had it been the real world, you would have fried it ($$$$).
The point I'm making is that you cannot trust Proteus to be 100% correct. There are other errors in the schematic that Proteus allows in the simulation that would have stopped the hardware from running properly, so remember just because it 'worked' on the screen doesn't mean it will with real chips !! |

hello yasser have are you done with this project?
if you have constructed the real hardware how did you manage to get the 3.3 level transistions? or did u just use 5v directly from Uc? |

hello M.Yasser
your code came out well and indeed helpful.
just one problem with my hardware is my contrast is not getting stabilized its gets off upon every reset and takes quite large time to display still full contrast is not achieved. |
