i have just checked out the pricing for pcwh its 400
for this amount i obviously get the rtos, i would like an rtos!
but do you still only get 30 days of updates.
i have found from past experience, that i dont find a fault
with the compiler until my updates has expired,
or you receive an email message 1 week after your updates expires
that they have fixed some sort of major problem with a feature that you were just about to start coding with.
the 30 days sticks in my throat somewhat.
i started using the ccs compiler because it was what the guy who wrote
tcp/ip lean used.
the c18 compiler is only 263, and its a proper compiler.
the pch i use, is and always will be to me, a toy.
but its what i use.
i have had to buy it three times and paid for maintainance
once. this thing is a bottomless pit, which i object to repeatedly paying for.
i think if ccs are going to charge proper prices
then they should give free updates on major bug fixes.
the amount of updates, gives me the impression that the compiler
is some sort of huge trial and error process. |

Quote: | the c18 compiler is only 263 | When ordered from the CCS website you pay $425, at the current exchange rate that equals 244, even less than the C18 compiler.
If you already own one of the CCS compilers you get an additional discount.
Quote: | but do you still only get 30 days of updates. | This is indeed a limitation. From the CCS website you can download two versions of the compiler:
- The latest version which is considered Beta until proven to have no major errors.
- An older version which is considered to be stable.
It would be nice when CCS would do bugfixes on the stable version and provide these for free. In fact that is the kind of service you expect when buying any product. CCS is not running their business like that. If you don't like it either complain to CCS directly, buy another compiler, or try to live with it (like I do).
B.t.w. I have noticed CCS to be flexible and sometimes extend your maintenance period for bug fixes when you contact them.
CCS is not perfect. They are about the cheapest compiler vendor for the PICC and you get what you pay for. When bugs are reported I've found CCS to release a bugfix in relative short time, but above all the quality of this forum is what this compiler makes my preferred tool for PIC projects. |
