If you have the R/W line to the LCD module asserted, remember that the module will then drive the bus and might conflict with the PIC. So disconnect the R/W line (or tie such that its only doing 'writes') at the module end and see what happens.

(I cant remember which way round R/W is - probably low to write, but please check!)

After RMW problem, another problem was in the code, now all ok.
